The High Sierra offers the finest spring skiing on the planet. A stable maritime snowpack on inviting terrain combines with the best of mountain weather to meld into touring where sunscreen and a Hawaiian shirt are in order. (And, yes, there's still hope for this year too.) Yet there has long been a divide between telemark and alpine touring approaches. Come explore the proponents of each, from steep drops to week-long crossings of the range, with a renowned guide, Doug Robinson, who has been testing the snow here for over 60 years. Doug will have some various gear options for you to check out hands on.

Doug Robinson is a professional mountaineer known internationally for his climbing, guiding and backcountry skiing, as well as his poetic writings about the mountains and why we climb them. Closely identified with California’s High Sierra, Doug has been called “the modern John Muir.”

Doug will have his new book, The Alchemy of Action, available for purchase and signing. Why do people climb mountains? Because it gets us high! Doug’s long-awaited new book, offers a fresh—even shocking—explanation of why people climb mountains, by delving into the brain chemistry behind climber’s euphoria. The intriguing story behind why we are so much more than “adrenaline junkies” leads deep into the psyches of all adventure athletes as they push toward the ragged edge of human potential and return with shimmering new awareness from a heady brew of hormonal cocktail that includes the surprising ingredients of home-made organic compounds.
